Brinsley FC is proud to remember Gerry Moore, a man whose love of football, family and his local community helped create opportunities for generations of young players in Brinsley.
Gerry spent his adult life in the village and was well known throughout the local community. Alongside his wife, Carole, he helped establish Brinsley Magpies, giving local youngsters the opportunity to play organised Sunday football and enjoy the game with their friends.
Brinsley Magpies became an established part of grassroots football in the area, with teams representing the village through the 1980s and into the 1990s. For many local families, the Magpies became part of their first experience of junior football and helped build a tradition that continues in Brinsley today.
But Gerry’s contribution was about much more than results, leagues or trophies.
He believed football should give young people opportunities, friendships, enjoyment and a sense of belonging.
That same philosophy could also be seen through Gerry’s lifelong love of Notts County. For many years he sold County 75 tickets and used the commission he received to help provide season tickets for disadvantaged children, allowing youngsters who may otherwise have missed out to experience live football.
Following Gerry’s passing, that generosity has continued through Gerry’s Tickets, an initiative led by his family that helps provide football experiences for disadvantaged children through the Notts County Foundation.
The Gerry Moore Trophy
Gerry’s connection with football in Brinsley continued through later generations of the club.
He attended an ATFA Brinsley presentation evening and personally presented the Gerry Moore Cup, recognising a young player who best represented the values the club wanted its children to demonstrate.
Today, Brinsley FC proudly continues that tradition.
Each year, the Gerry Moore Trophy is presented to a player who represents the values Gerry stood for – commitment, teamwork, kindness, enjoyment of football and being a great teammate both on and off the pitch.
It is deliberately about much more than being the best footballer.
It recognises the type of young person we want Brinsley FC to help develop.
Continuing the Legacy
The name of the club may have changed over the years – from teams such as Brinsley Magpies, through ATFA Brinsley, to the Brinsley FC of today – but an important principle has remained the same:
Give local children somewhere to play football, develop, make friends and feel that they belong.
That is the legacy people such as Gerry helped create.
As Brinsley FC continues to grow and provide football for children of different ages, backgrounds and abilities, we are proud to ensure that Gerry’s contribution to football in our village is not forgotten.
Every time the Gerry Moore Trophy is handed to another young player, a little part of that story continues.
